SSW Visa

Service Description

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Visa is a Japanese work visa introduced in April 2019 to address labor shortages in key industries. Here's a comprehensive breakdown:

Two Visa Categories

SSW (i) – Basic/Entry Level

Valid for up to 5 years (renewable annually, total 5)

Requires passing:

  • A skill test in your industry
  • A Japanese language test (JLPT N4, JFT Basic, etc.)
  • Exemptions are available if you’ve completed Japan’s Technical Intern Training in the same field 
  • Cannot bring family
  • Covers 16 designated industries (e.g., agriculture, hospitality, nursing care, construction, food service, transport, forestry) 

SSW (ii) – Skilled/Advanced

  •  Unlimited stay via renewals 
  • No mandatory Japanese test, but conversational ability is expected 
  • Family can accompany (spouse, children) 
  • Available in 11 industries(advanced exclusion of some entry fields)

Where You Can Work

 SSW (i): All 16 Fields

  •  Includes sectors such as nursing care, food service, cleaning management, and shipbuilding, among others.

SSW (ii): 11 Fields

  • Excludes nursing care, transport, railway, forestry, and wood industries.

Eligibility Requirements

1. At least 18 years old (tests allowed from age 17 in some countries)

2. Pass the industry-specific skill exam, unless you have prior training under Japan’s Technical Intern Program

3. Pass Japanese language test (only for SSW (i))

4. Job offer from a Japan-registered company

5. Health, clean record, and other standard visa prerequisites

Application Process

1. Choose your target industry

2. Prepare & pass both the skill and language tests

3. Secure a job offer

4. Employer applies for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

5. You apply for the SSW visa at a Japanese embassy

6. Depart Japan and undergo municipal and company orientation
