Preparation Description

The JLPT is the official Japanese language test with 5 levels: N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). Here is a guide on how to improve effectively with difficulty-scaling due to the order of levels.

Choose Your Level
  • N5 = Basic greetings, hiragana/katakana, simple sentences
  • N4 = Daily expressions, basic grammar, kanji (\~300)
  • N3 = Intermediate grammar, reading comprehension, listening
  • N2 = Advanced reading, complex grammar, business vocabulary
  • N1 = Native-level comprehension, academic/professional fluency

Master the Test Structure
Each JLPT level includes 3 sections:
  •  Language Knowledge (Vocabulary & Grammar)
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Listening Comprehension
Practice with Mock Tests

  • Try past papers and sample questions for every level
  • Join a mock test event (many institutes offer it 1–2 months before the actual test)
Study Plan Example (N5 - 3 months)
  • Week 1–2: Focus on Hiragana, Katakana, basic vocabulary
  • Week 3–4: Focus on Grammar practices, verb conjugation
  • Week 5–6: Listening practice, kanji (50–100)
  • Week 7–8: Reading short texts, sentence structure
  • Week 9–10: Timed mock tests & error review
Exam Tips
  • Don’t skip listening practice - it’s 1/3 of the test
  • Learn test vocabulary early (JLPT lists are available online)
  • Practice reading kana and kanji quickly
  • Work on timing and stamina, especially for N3 and above
